Solitary Symptomatic Spinal Extradural Arachnoid Cyst Needing Surgical Treatment: A Series of Three Cases
نویسنده
چکیده
Extradural arachnoid cysts are rare lesions which may produce symptoms by compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots. Surgery is the treatment of choice in such lesions but asymptomatic patients can be managed conservatively. We present three cases of symptomatic extradural arachnoid cysts managed at our institute. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) done in all cases showed an extradural arachnoid cyst at Dorsal (2 cases) and cervical (1 case) level. All patients were operated with successful result. The pathophysiology, symptomatology, investigations and treatment options of this rare condition are described in relation to our cases. Key messages: Extradural arachnoid cysts are rare lesions which may produce symptoms by compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots. Surgery is the treatment of choice in such lesions but asymptomatic patients can be managed conservatively. Symptomatic patients have good results with surgical excision of the cyst.

Large Thoracolumbar Extradural Arachnoid Cyst Excised by Minimal Skipped Hemilaminectomy: A Case Report
The standard treatment for symptomatic spinal extradural arachnoid cyst (SEAC) is complete surgical removal of cyst and closure of the dural defect. In most cases, total laminectomy has been performed at affected vertebra for complete removal of the SEAC. However, this invasive surgery may result in postoperative kyphosis and back pain. We report a case of large SEAC involving T10-L1 which was ...

The purpose of the present communication is to describe two patients, one with a congenital extradural and one with a congenital intradural arachnoid cyst of the spine and to review the relevant literature. Congenital spinal arachnoid cyst is a very rare cause of spinal cord compression. It is one of the most favourable spinal lesions for surgical removal and recovery of neurological function. ...
متن کاملMultiple extradural spinal arachnoid cysts: a case report and review of the literature
Extradural spinal arachnoid cysts are rare lesions, which may become symptomatic due to mass effect. Multiple cysts are even rarer of which few are reported to date. A 17-year-old male with acute onset urinary retention and progressive paraparesis is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging of spine revealed multiple spinal extradural arachnoid cysts located dorsal to the spinal cord, causing mass...
متن کاملLaminectomy by craniotome for huge spinal extradural arachnoid cyst: a case report
Background: Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst is extremely rare. The longest SEACs that have been reported in previous studies involved no more than 5 spinal segments. This study presents a case of SEAC diagnosed from T9 to L4 and excised through a novel laminectomy/laminoplasty. Case presentation: A 22-year-old female presented with a 5-year history of progressive paraparesis and numbness in bo...
متن کاملPosterior spinal cord herniation into an extradural thoracic arachnoid cyst: surgical treatment. Case report and review of the literature.
The authors describe the case of a 2-year-old boy who experienced progressive spastic paraparesis for several months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive extradural arachnoid cyst at the T3-L1 levels and posterior spinal cord herniation at T3-4. Surgical release of the neck of the hernia and total resection of the arachnoid cyst were performed. The patient had good clinical recover...
